Scholarship Trust
The Trust is administered by a Board of Trustees of which Sir Frederick Smith, M.B.E., K.C., is Chairman. Sir Frederick Smith is a former Attorney General and Chief Justice.
In addition to the finance component, each scholarship also includes a work attachment to the firm, for the scholarship recipients.

1998 Diana Douglin
Ms. Diana Douglin was the first recipient of the George Walton Payne & Company Scholarship Trust in 1998. She completed her Bachelor of Law Degree with Upper Second Class Honours at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, before proceeding to the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad, graduating in 2000, at the top of her class. Ms. Douglin, a former student of Harrison College, joined GWP & Co. as an associate in 2000.
1999 Laura Gooding
The 1999 recipient of the George Walton Payne & Company Scholarship Trust was Laura Gooding, who graduated from the Hugh Wooding Law School, Trinidad, in 2001. Ms. Gooding, who has completed her Bachelor of Law Degree at the University of the West Indies, is a former student of Ellerslie Secondary School and Combermere.
2000 Ouida Boyce
Ouida Boyce, the third recipient of the George Walton Payne & Company Scholarship Trust, entered the Hugh Wooding Law School in 2000, to complete two years of Law studies. Ms. Boyce is a former student of Harrison College, and holds a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of the West Indies.

Presentation of the award was made on Friday, August 18, 2006 by Mr. Darwin Goodridge, Secretary/Treasurer of the Scholarship Trust. The presentation took place at the offices of George Walton Payne & Co. and was witnessed by her mother, Judith Atwell and Ms. Nicole Nurse, an Attorney-at-Law with the Firm.
2007 Richelle Connell
The recipient was educated at Charles F. Broome Primary School, Queen’s College, the Barbados Community College and the University of the West Indies. She graduated from the Law Faculty at Cave Hill with upper second class honours in the LLB programme at the end of the 2006/2007 academic year. The scholarship winner proceeded to the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago to pursue the Legal Education Certificate course.
Darwin Goodridge, Secretary/Treasurer of the Scholarship Trust, presented Richelle Connell with her award at the law offices of George Walton Payne & Co., on Tuesday, 28th August 2007. Attorney-at-Law, Nicole Nurse, who is the company’s representative on the Board of Trustees, witnessed the presentation.
2008 Susan Rock
The recipient of the scholarship attended St. Lucy Primary School and St. James Secondary School. Her post secondary scholastic achievements include the Associate Degree in Arts (Geography and Law) from the Barbados Community College in 2002, the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Linguistics with First Class Honours from the University of the West Indies in 2005 and the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree with Lower Second Class Honours from the Law Faculty at Cave Hill in 2008.
The award for 2008 was presented to the winner by Madam Justice Dr. Sonia Richards, during a short ceremony at Dowell Chambers, Bridgetown on Thursday, 28 August 2008. Present were Shirley Rock, the Mother of Latoya Rock, Nicole Nurse, Diana Douglin and Darwin Goodgridge.
2009 Sade Jemmott
The Scholarship winner, who celebrated her 21st birthday on the 14th July 2009, received her primary education at Hillaby/Turner’s Hall Primary School. She subsequently attended Queens College followed by the Law Faculty at Cave Hill from September 2006 where she graduated with Upper Second Class Honours in the LLB programme at the end of the 2008/09 academic year.
The applicants for the Scholarship were interviewed on Monday, 10 August 2009 by the Board of Trustees under the chairmanship of retired High Court Judge Sir Frederick Smith, Q.C.
The award for 2009 was presented to the scholarship winner by Attorney-at-Law Shontelle Murrell, the representative of George Walton Payne & Co. on the Board of Trustees. She was a previous scholarship winner in 2004. The Secretary/Treasurer of the Trust retired Permanent Secretary Darwin Goodridge and Shellyann Barrow, an aunt of the recipient, were present during the short award ceremony which was held at Dowell House, Bridgetown on Friday, 4 September 2009.
2010 Lorie Yarde
The 2010 winner was Lorie Neto Yarde of Pegwell, Christ Church. She received her primary and secondary education at Christ Church Girls School and Christ Church Foundation School respectively between 1988 and 2000. She subsequently enrolled at the Barbados Community College after leaving Christ Church Foundation School and was awarded an Associate Degree in Arts (English and History) in 2002. The awardee continued her tertiary level education at the University of the West Indies from September 2002 and gained an Upper Second Class BSc degree in Sociology and Psychology at the end of the 2005/2006 academic year. She then entered the Law Faculty in September 2006 to pursue the LLB programme. She was awarded the Bachelor of Laws degree with Upper Second Class Honours after completing her examinations at the end of the 2009/2010 academic year. The recipient of the scholarship entered the Hugh Wooding Law School in September 2010 to pursue the Legal Education Certificate programme at that institution.
The presentation of the award was made to Lorie Yarde on Wednesday, 8 September 2010 at Dowell House, Bridgetown, by the 2004 Scholarship winner Shontelle Murrell, who is an Associate of the law firm George Walton Payne & Co. Ms. Juan Ifill, the mother of the Scholarship winner and the Secretary/Treasurer of the Trust, retired Permanent Secretary Darwin Goodridge, were present during the short award ceremony.
2011 Khamaal Collymore
Khamaal Collymore attended Roland Edward’s Primary School and Queen’s College between 1994 and 2008. After completing his secondary education, he enrolled in the Law Faculty at Cave Hill to pursue the LLB undergraduate programme. He graduated with Upper Second Class Honours at the end of the 2010-11 academic year and pursued the legal certificate program at Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica starting in September 2011.
Apart from his academic achievements, Khamaal Collymore is an accomplished musician who plays the piano. He has been sharing his musical expertise at a number of churches throughout the island and has also been assisting the youth to improve their musical skills, through his application with the Notes of Praise Music School for the past several years.
The presentation of the award was made at Dowell Chambers, Bridgetown on Tuesday, 30th August 2011 by Attorney-at-Law Shontelle Murrell, one of the Trustees of the Scholarship. Witnessing the short ceremony were Susan Rock and Secretary/Treasurer of the Trust Darwin Goodridge.
Khamaal Collymore joined the Firm of George Walton Payne & Co. as an Associate following the completion of his legal training. At the time of his departure from the Firm in 2021, he held the position of Partner.
2012 Janet Taylor
The scholarship winner was a student in the Law Faculty at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies from 2009 to 2012. She satisfied the requirements for the award of the Bachelor of Laws degree with First Class Honours at the end of 2011/12 academic year. Janet Taylor was a past student of Belmont Primary School, Combermere School and the Barbados Community College where she obtained an Associate Degree in Arts (Law and Sociology) with Credit in 2009.
The first runner up was also a student in the Law Faculty at Cave Hill between 2009 and 2012. She was awarded a Bachelors of Law degree with Upper Second Class Honours. Destinie Simmons received her primary education at Charles F. Broomes and is a past student of Harrison College.
The scholarship winner and the proxime accessit enrolled at the Hugh Wooding Law in Trinidad and Tobago from September 2011 where they pursued a two year Legal Education Certificate course at that institution.
The awards for 2012 were presented to the scholarship winner and the first runner up by Attorney-at-Law Shontelle Murrell of the law firm George Walton Payne & Co. She is the firm’s representative on the Board of Trustees of the charity. The Secretary/Treasurer of the Trust retired Permanent Secretary Darwin Goodridge and relatives of the two recipients of the awards, attended the presentation ceremony which was held at Dowell Chambers, Bridgetown on Monday, 27th August 2012.
2013 Olivia Dos Santos
She is a past student of Lawrence T. Gay Primary School and Queen’s College where she was awarded a Barbados Government Exhibition at the end of her Secondary School Studies in 2010. She subsequently graduated from the Law faculty at Cave Hill with the Upper Second Class Honours in the LLB degree programme.
The Scholarship winner pursued the two year Legal Education Certificate programme at Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad & Tobago.
The Board of Trustees of the Scholarship Trust also awarded two grants to Chanika Jovita Carrington of Church Hill Road, Christ Church and Renee Monique Peterkin of No. 63 Breezy Hill, Halton Terrace, St. Philip, to assist them in meeting their expenses during the Legal Education Certificate programme at the Hugh Wooding Law School.
The three winners were presented with their awards by Ms. Shontelle Murrell, an Associate of George Walton Payne & Co., during a short ceremony at Dowell Chambers, Bridgetown on Tuesday, 3rd September 2013.
The presentations were witnessed by Michael Dos Santos father of Olivia Dos Santos, Winston and Estalene Carrington parents of Chanika Carrington, Sandra Kirton, Tricia Briggs and Tyesha Trotman mother, sister and niece of Renee Peterkin and Darwin Goodridge, the Secretary/Treasurer of the Board of Trustees of the Scholarship Trust.
2014 Erica Griffith
The scholarship winner attended the St. Gabriel Primary School, the St. Michael School and Queen’s College where she received her primary and secondary education between 1997 and 2011.
She subsequently enrolled in the Law Faculty of the Cave Hill campus of the University of West Indies in September, 2011 and graduated with First Class Honours in the Bachelor of Laws programme at the end of three (3) academic years in May 2014.
She proceeded to Trinidad and Tobago to pursue the two (2) years legal certificate course at the Hugh Wooding Law School.
Ms. Erica Griffith received the award during a short ceremony at the firm of George Walton Payne & Co. on Friday the 29th day of August, 2014. The award was made by Attorney-at-Law, Mrs. Shontelle N. Murrell-Hinkson, who is an associate of the law firm and one of the Trustees of the Charity.
Witnessing the presentation were Mrs. Carol Griffith, mother of the scholarship winner, Attorney-at- Law, Mr. Khamaal Collymore, as well as the former Chief Education Officer Mr. Ralph Boyce and retired Permanent Secretary, Mr. Darwin Goodridge, who are also two (2) Trustees on the Board of Directors.
The awardee was very active during her school days enjoying extracurricular activities such as track and field and lawn tennis. She was also a youth leader and active participant of St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, where she is still a member.
2015 Traimaine Taylor
The proceeds from the scholarship assisted the winner to meet his expenses while pursuing the two (2) year legal education certificate course at the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago.
The scholarship winner is a past student of St. Davids Primary School, The St. Michael School and Queens College which he attended between September 2000 and July 2012. After completing his secondary education, he enrolled in the Law Faculty at the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies in September, 2012. He graduated with First Class Honours in the Bachelor of Laws programme at the end of the 2014/15 academic year.
Attorney-at-Law, Mrs. Shontelle Murrell-Hinkson, an Associate with the law firm George Walton Payne & Company, presented the award to the successful applicant during a short ceremony at Dowell Chambers, Bridgetown on Friday, the 28th day of August, 2015. Witnessing the presentation were Jacqueline Ward, mother of the scholarship winner, Claudia Clarke-Oderson a family friend and Darwin Goodridge, the Secretary/Treasurer of the Charity.
Traimaine Taylor represented his secondary schools at basketball, cricket as well as track and field during his student days at the two institutions.
2016 Najla King
The recipient of the award received her education at Ellerslie Secondary School, the Barbados Community College, the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies and the IMO International Maritime Law Institute in Malta. She was awarded the following qualifications by the three institutions:-

The scholarship winner was accepted by the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago to pursue the two year legal education certificate course at the institution.
The award was presented to the successful applicant during a short ceremony at Dowell Chambers, Bridgetown on Friday, 26th August, 2016. Attorney-at-Law Mrs. Shontelle Murrell-Hinkson who is a partner of George Walton Payne & Co. as well as the firm’s representative on the Board of Trustees of the Charity, made the presentation to Najla King. Rosemary King, the mother of the scholarship winner, her sister Kyalamboka King-Bruce, Traimaine Taylor the 2015 Scholarship winner and Darwin Goodridge, the Secretary-Treasurer, of the Board of Trustees were present at the award ceremony.
Najla King, who is an environmental enthusiast, was a former head-girl of Ellerslie Secondary School. She is a friend of the Senders in Fisheries team as well as an affiliate member of the Barbados National Union of Fisherfolks Organisations.
2017 Kaviar Callender
The recipient attended Westbury Primary School and Queens College Secondary, before enrolling in the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Course at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies in 2014. He successfully completed his studies in May 2017. The scholarship winner was selected after the Board of Trustees of the Charity had interviewed fourteen applicants, under its Chairman Attorney-at-Law Mr. Keith Mayers, Q.C., on Friday, 25th August, 2017.
Kaviar Callender pursued the two-year legal certificate course at the Hugh Wooding Law School.
His extra-curricular activities involve hockey, cricket as well as track and field.
The award was presented to the scholarship winner by Mrs. Jewel Barrow, an Associate of the Law firm of George Walton Payne & Company during a short ceremony at Dowell house Bridgetown on Wednesday, 30th August, 2017. Witnessing the presentation were Mrs. Kathy-Ann BlackmanWalker the mother of the scholarship winner, his sister Vanessa Callender, a family friend Cameron Weekes, Traimaine Taylor the 2015 Scholarship Winner and Darwin Goodridge, Secretary/Treasurer of the Scholarship Trust.
2018 Shaddiah Hinds
The scholarship winner was an active participant in extra-curricular activities from primary school through to University. She was also a Sunday school teacher at Revival Faith Centre which she attended at Dunscombe in St. Thomas.
Shaddiah Hinds enrolled in the two-year Legal Education Certificate programme at the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago which is a requirement for her to practise as an Attorney-at-Law. The scholarship award included an internship with the law firm George Walton Payne & Co., at the end of her first year in the twin island republic. SHADDIAH had the opportunity to gain valuable guidance from the senior members of the company’s staff before embarking on the final year of her studies at the Hugh Wooding Law School.
The award was presented to the scholarship winner during a short ceremony at Dowell Chambers, Bridgetown on Thursday 30th August, 2018 by Attorney-at-Law Ms. Jewel Barrow who is a member of the company’s staff. Witnessing the presentation were her mother Sheldine Hinds, her 6 year old brother Shadarri Hinds-Hewitt, two former scholarship winners Traimaine Taylor and Kavíar Callendar as well as Darwin Goodridge, the Secretary/Treasurer of the Scholarship Trust.
2019 Okera Hill
2020 Ashley Maynard
The scholarship winner is enrolled in the two-year programme for the Legal Education certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago and is due to complete her studies in May 2022.
Her extracurricular activities during her teenage years included playing the steel pan and volunteer work with the Barbados Youth Advisory movement which is the youth arm of the Barbados Family Planning Association.
The scholarship was presented to the recipient during a short ceremony at Dowell Chambers, Bridgetown on Friday, 25th September 2020 by Mr. Enny, one of the Trustees with the Board of Directors. Witnessing the presentation was Khamaal Collymore, an Attorney at Law and a Partner of George Walton Payne & Company.
