Andrew V. Thornhill, K.C

Andrew graduated from the University of the West Indies in 1987 with a Bachelor of Laws, Ll.B. (Hons) degree. Shortly after, he gained experience at a leading accounting firm on the island in their tax department and at an international merchant and trustee bank as its Legal Officer. Thereafter, he attended the Hugh Wooding Law School. He graduated from Hugh Wooding Law School and was called to the Barbados Bar in 1995.

Overview

Andrew’s main areas of practice are Corporate and Commercial Law and International Financial Services. Andrew was, until 31 December 2020, the Managing Partner at the firm. Andrew also works closely with major United States, Canadian, and European Law firms in cross-border mergers and acquisitions; the structuring of international corporate financial transactions, including the preparation of legal documentation, the review of legal documentation, perfecting security given in respect of the financing, and the provision of legal advice and legal opinions.   • On 6 April 2018 he was appointed one of Her Majesty’s Counsel for Barbados.
  • He is a Charter Member of the Congress of Fellows of the Center for International Legal Studies.
  • Member of the Board of Directors of Manufacturers P&C Limited, a company principally engaged in the provision of reinsurance coverage for certain property and casualty insurance risks.
  • Member of the Board of Directors of TD Reinsurance (Barbados) Inc., a company that reinsures mortality and morbidity risks arising from life, critical illness and disability coverage originating primarily from North America and Europe.
Former Appointments
  • Andrew is a former chairman of the Board of Directors of Columbus International Inc., a Barbados based, privately held international business provider of broadband services and retail internet. Columbus International Inc. was acquired by Cable & Wireless Communications Plc in 2016.

Presentations Andrew has made presentations in the United States of America, Germany, United Kingdom and Hong Kong on the use of Barbados as an International Business and Financial Services Jurisdiction. He has also made presentations locally on matters of corporate and commercial law. Acquisitions
  • Andrew was Barbados counsel to Emera (Barbados) Holdings No. 2 Ltd. (“EBH2”) and Emera Inc. for the 2015-2016 acquisition by EBH2 of Emera (Caribbean) Incorporated.
He was also Barbados counsel to AmBev S.A. and SLU Beverages Ltd. (“SLU”) for the 2015-2016 acquisition by SLU of Banks Holdings Limited, the sole beer and malt producer on the island of Barbados.
